History

The history of Crompton Greaves Limited (CG) in India dates back to 1800s. It was founded in England by Col. REB Crompton in 1878 as REB Crompton & Co. to engage in manufacturing and contracting of electrical equipment.

Subsequently, REB Crompton & Co. amalgamated with F&A Parkinson Limited and was renamed Crompton Parkinson Limited (CPL) in England. In 1937, CPL set up an Indian subsidiary in Mumbai, Crompton Parkinson Works Ltd., along with Greaves Cotton & Crompton Parkinson Ltd, a sales outfit.

After India’s independence in 1947, the company was taken over by the eminent industrialist, Lala Karamchand Thapar, the founder of the Thapar Group. In 1966, Crompton Greaves Limited (CG) was formed out of the merger of Crompton Parkinson Works Ltd and Greaves Cotton & Crompton Parkinson Ltd.

In the 1960s, Crompton Greaves expanded from motors and consumer products to the electrical engineering segment by acquiring transformer technology from Westinghouse Electric Corporation of USA, to manufacture aluminum wound and 400 kV transformers.

The company subsequently expanded to switchgears, vacuum interrupters and other allied businesses. By 2005, Crompton Greaves had become one of India’s leading electrical engineering companies (Industrial Systems, Power Systems and Consumer Products), as well as one of the bigger global players.

In 2005, Crompton Greaves acquired Belgium-based Pauwels Group to acquire additional manufacturing facilities for Power and Distribution transformers in Belgium, Ireland, USA and Indonesia. A series of acquisitions followed thereafter:

    • 2006 – Ganz, Hungary
    • 2007 – Microsol, Ireland
    • 2008 – Sonomatra, France and MSE, USA
    • 2010 – PTS, UK

Crompton Greaves has now emerged as a full solutions provider – and a serious international player.
